From Dean Byron R. Burnham

In today's world of extreme competition one of the distinct advantages is a graduate degree. Students who are committed to further their formal education have a wide choice of 128 graduate degrees offered at Utah State University. Graduate studies involve extended course work, major projects, internships, and intensive research experiences.

As a Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive University, USU is in the top 2.4 percent of all higher education institutions. As Utah's land-grant university, the faculty keeps in touch with the real-life problems of society as well as the intellectual challenges of scholarly research. Utah State University competes at a national level for the very best students in the state, region, nation, and the world.

USU's distinguished graduate faculty works closely with students to create a rigorous learning environment that promotes strong collegial ties between faculty and students. We produce, at the doctoral level, men and women who are recognized as leaders in research and teaching. The research skills are taught by using intense collaborative work. We are seeking to improve teaching skills at the doctoral and senior graduate student level by instituting a Teaching Academy where the teaching learning interaction is the focus.

As a Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive University, USU is in the top 2.4 percent of all higher education institutions

To accomplish these goals, expanded resources are required in the areas of fellowships, scholarships, and travel support. We invite you to help us produce the next generation of scholars and professionals who engage in advanced studies.

Fellowships and Scholarships:

We are about students and their success. Fellowships and scholarships will enable graduate students to concentrate upon their studies and focus on projects that are often cutting edge. They will make USU competitive with other universities in attracting them to study at USU. Student support is one of the critically important areas for support.

Travel Awards:

The education and training of a graduate student moves beyond the walls of the classroom into the field and into professional meetings. It is in this atmosphere that a student becomes involved in the collection of data and the public presentation of ideas, research, and analysis adding to his or her understanding of the complex world of the sciences, the arts, and technology.

Teaching Academy:

The Teaching Academy will use our outstanding faculty members and bring nationally recognized teachers in higher education to USU for formal and informal interaction with graduate students around the subject of the teaching and learning transaction. This will provide our students with skills that will make them competitive on the job market, and it will also provide many of our undergraduate students will excellent classroom experiences as these graduate students apply newly learned skills in teaching.
